Denniza Colon Matarelli
Fine Artist
Denniza Colon Matarelli was born in New York to Puerto Rican immigrants, or how so the misconception goes when questioning their citizenship. Being a Nuyorican means a name that captures the city of NY and the importance of developing Puerto Rican cultural identity in a big city. The sirens, pollution, standard bricks, cement all change with a childhood trip to Puerto Rico. The vibrant color, the beach, the sounds of the el coqui and jungle were a stark contrast to everything she knew.
She wanted to capture everything in her sketchbook, nature, and animals that she saw in the land of her ancestors/tropical paradise. At this point, she realized she wanted to dedicate her life to learning about art and developing her skills. Denniza earned her BFA in painting from San German Inter-American University and studied at the Escuelas de Artes Plasticas, both in Puerto Rico, and became a private school art and English as a second language teacher in 1995. In 1999, she left the island to serve in the military, and she discovered illustration and was awarded top of the class.
Since leaving the army to raise her family, Denniza accepted commissions and focused personal work inspired by landscape and People, although no longer active. Her preferred medium in painting is acrylic on canvas, drawing, and watercolor. In hopes to convey to her audience, her paintings also have a wonder of appreciation of her culture and traditions Denniza has exhibited her work in Florida and plans to share her work/grow her audience. She is currently a candidate for an MA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. Denniza feels that art is a gift that needs to share it with the world. Attach resume in the bottom.
